Jodi and I thought it would be a great idea to do a Pumpkin unit for measurement in math. Plain and simple: BAD IDEA! It started out to be great but I honestly don't know if the students got anything out of it. Weighing the pumpkins was fine...but then it came time to cut them open and three of 10 in my class were rotten! There was green goop inside, but the students still braved it and tried to count the seeds. Then, I had them hollow them out, hoping that it would dry out and all the rotten mess would go away. We were wrong! I came back on Monday and my classroom stunk of rotten pumpkin. I had to throw away two pumpkins and the students were still great about the whole thing. We tried to do the circumference and volume and now I had enough. The students all didn't get a chance to do the volume, and thats okay, but I threw out the pumpkins today and disinfected my counters about five times! I had dried pumpkin guts everywhere and it stunk! I kep the seeds because we didn't float it yet...and heck, we forgot to float the pumpkins after the seeds were taken out. Darn. Well, I guess we'll just skip that part. Lesson learned from this...don't get pumpkins with holes in it to begin with, and don't let them sit over the weekend. Start on a Monday and end on a Friday. OR, just get fake pumpkins and skip the whole cutting into and getting out the guts part...even though that was quite fun.
Today is election day! Iowa has me registered but my name is spelled incorrectly. I'm afraid they won't let me vote because I'm not a resident really...I'm not a student and I have to live here for a year because I can be considered a real Iowa resident...but I'm not sure if college counts. I hope I get to vote because I will be very dissatisfied if I don't. I'm waiting for Greg to get out of class and we're going to try to get me to vote! YaY!!!
Tomorrow my students are doing their campaign speeches and we'll vote. I have to make ballots for them :)
Off to look for a bank statement and proof of working in Iowa...maybe that'll work. We'll see!
