I was driving back from my Junior Achievement practicum today when I realized, or at least thought about, that my favorite classes at drake were the ones that I actually learned something and took knowledge away. I've been put in this situation where I don't really get to enjoy all of my classes. Many times I get things done to put another check-mark on my "things to do" list, and I don't take the class to its entirety and appreciation that I should. With that, I would like to recommend a few classes.
English 102 with Professor Elizabeth Robertson. This is one heck of a challenging class, yet I never truly understood grammar and the application until I took this class. Trust me on this one: its not just about grammar, but it is about parts of speech you learned to recognize but never learned why it was important and here it all makes sense. Everyone was frustrated with this class, but it is totally worth the time and effort.
Educ 164: Perspectives (there is a really long title, but this is what its shortened to) with Professor Eric Johnson. I can't even begin with words on how much I recommend this class to you whether you are an Education major or not. This is very much discussion based and you hit topics that are usually avoided because they are sensitive issues. He makes you really think about and analyze the world we live in, and the diversity, culture, humanity, race, everything. I loved it. It really brought a new perspective to my outlook on life.
Art 83: Elementary Art with Professor Ed Wong. This class is SO much fun if you love art. We learn about all the different kinds of art projects you can do in the classroom, but you get to do it too! This was awesome. I also love art. We used pastels, paints, paper projects, clay, coal?...everything you would ever want to. Get ready to get dirty! It's pretty relaxing too because you can just sit and do your artwork while chatting with your neighbors.
Educ 107: Learning and Assessment with Professor Roberts. She teaches this material beautifully. A lot of class discussion, a lot of hand on, and projects that benefit you. Great class.
I'm in a few good ones right now, but I can't judge them to their entirety until I have completed them.
Enjoy the classes you select and remember that you are taking them for yourself and not the professor, so try to make the most out of them.
